Core Program

Most of us know that good health requires a combination of choices and behaviors: eating well, regular exercise, ample rest, managing stress, timely medical check-ups, and more.  Likewise, a creative musical output requires an approach that balances a crucial set of activities, and also offers the student a meaningful social context for making music with peers.

The Core Program provides a comprehensive approach to lessons that supports the development of skills and concepts, puts them into authentic action, and thus yields the desired result.

When students enroll in the Core Program, we offer the following:

1Private or Partner Studio Lessons with an experienced and caring mentor.

2Comprehensive Musicianship Program (CMP) courses and workshops designed to cultivate musical skills and understanding.

3Performance Programs that are developmentally and stylistically sensitive and provide a social context for music making.

4Ample support for personal practice time at home, including FREE access to Berklee PULSE, a content rich, interactive online music learning system we offer through our collaboration with the Berklee College of Music as Atlanta's only Berklee City Music Network site.

Comprehensive Musicianship Programs

The Comprehensive Musicianship Program (or CMP) Courses and Workshops provide essential support for Music Center students. Time spent one-on-one with a studio teacher and in group classes taught by specialists work in tandem to foster musical understanding, skills, and ultimately, preparation for performance. Best of all, students who enroll in lessons are offered CMP Courses and some Workshops at no additional cost. Students who study privately elsewhere may enroll in CMP Courses and Workshops by Registering as a Selective Student.

Performance Programs

While some students study music with no performances in mind, most people take lessons and classes with the goal of developing the skills and confidence to play for others, either friends and family members or an appreciative audience, small or large.  After all, who wants to be alone hour after hour in a practice room, taking lessons week after week, with no end, no purpose, no clear goals in sight?

Drawing on Studio Lesson and CMP Course & Workshop training, Music Center students form coached ensembles of all kinds--  Chamber Ensembles, Jazz Combos, Rock Bands, Bluegrass, Folk, and Old-Time Bands, small vocal ensembles, and music theater troupes.  Through the small ensemble program, we help aspiring musicians cultivate a stylistically and developmentally sensitive authentic performance practice.
